Sights around the Ziach & Candy | Discover, marvel, enjoy
The Pongau region has far more to offer than mountains and fresh air alone. Natural wonders, adventures, and history await you around every corner. Whether it’s the thrill of tandem paragliding, the power of rushing waterfalls, or the charm of Alpine culture, here are a few places well worth a visit.
From the Fulseck, you can take to the skies in tandem with an experienced pilot and enjoy sweeping views over the mountains surrounding the Gasteintal valley. Perfect for anyone in search of a little adrenaline and a completely different perspective on the landscape. No previous experience is needed – just the courage to take off.
The Liechtensteinklamm Gorge, near St. Johann im Pongau, is one of the deepest gorges in the Alps. Wooden walkways lead between towering rock faces that rise up to 300 metres high, while the water rushes below. One of the highlights is the dramatic spiral Helix staircase, which descends deep into the gorge and makes the visit all the more memorable.
Right in the heart of Bad Gastein, the Gasteiner Ache plunges 341 metres over three cascades. The best views are from the bridges, while the waterfall path takes you close to the water itself. It is a spectacular natural sight and one that leaves a lasting impression.
With around 400 years of history, earthen floors underfoot, and an open fire warming the room, the Karseggalm offers a look at Alpine culture in its most authentic form. Here, you can experience the traditions of the Grossarltal valley the way they have been lived for generations – genuine, welcoming, and untouched by showmanship.
Steep, dramatic, and wonderfully atmospheric, the Gadaunerer Gorge was named Austria’s most beautiful place in 2024. One of its highlights is the Katharinastollen, a tunnel that leads safely behind a waterfall. Geologically fascinating and scenically striking, it is a must for anyone who loves nature and walking.
The 30-meter-high spiral staircase made of Corten steel is the architectural highlight of the Liechtenstein Gorge. Twisting downward, it reaches deep into the gorge and offers views you won’t soon forget. Those who dare can descend, while the rest admire it from above.
A 16th-century farmhouse that is an exhibit in its own right, the Kösslerhäusl offers a glimpse into the lives of mining families in centuries past. Inside, you can discover an old smoke kitchen, historical tools, and, on Fridays in summer, freshly made “Bauernkrapfen” (fried pastries) prepared by the local farming families. A place where tradition can be experienced with all the senses.
